Training course for designated Ship Safety Officers working on board cruise or passenger vessels

Objectives

The objective of this training is to provide the participants with the knowledge, understanding and proficiency necessary to fulfil the role of Ship Safety Officer within their company. Special focus will be on company specific SMS, OHS Management System on board and related policies.

The course will be tailored to the specific needs of your company and is therefore only offered as an in-house training course. Please contact your local Maritime Academy to discuss your requirements.

Duration: 3 days

 

The ISM Code requires that all personnel involved in the company's SMS have an adequate understanding of relevant rules, regulations, codes and guidelines. The company should ensure that all personnel have the qualifications, training and experience that may be required in support of the SMS (MSC-MEPC.7/Circ. 8)

The comprehensive 3 day training is for those designated as Ship Safety Officers or those who will potentially cover the same role in the near future. It covers all the important aspects of the function, including how to apply all available company resources (policies and procedures) for the effective implementation of of the company's management systems. Case studies are used to promote an interactive learning environment and the course ends with a final test.

  • Regulatory background and legal requirements with focus on MLC, ISM, OHS and CLIA requirements
  • Human Element and Safety Culture on board
  • Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification on board
  • Definition of Accident /Incident/Near Miss
  • Accident/Incident Investigation and Root Cause Analysis
  • Accident statistics in the cruise segment
  • Role of the Ship Safety Officer (duties, responsibilities, safety tasks)
  • Company Safety Management System (record keeping)
  • Safety Round Exercise, Crew Drills and Trainings
  • Occupational Health and Safety Company Policy on board and PTW system
  • Safety Audits
