Qualification of composite components

Two-day training course on the design and fabrication of composite components, according to DNV-ST-C501 – a standard with a proven track-record across industry sectors.

DNV's Technology Centre in Oslo is a leader in the qualification of polymer and composite material solutions for critical applications. This training course is a deep dive into DNV-ST-C501, our versatile standard (ST) covering all phases of composite component qualification from design and testing to fabrication and maintenance. This standard specifies the structural requirements and best practice to follow for structural parts consisting of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Aspects related to documentation, verification, and inspection are also addressed.

The course touches on the following key aspects of composite component qualification, accompanied by experience and lessons learnt from past DNV projects. There will be time to cover certain topics of particular interest to participants in greater detail (e.g., assessment of critical failure modes, determination of characteristic material data, and long-term failure mechanisms).

  • Design philosophy and governing principles, including the standard’s structure and workflow
  • Design basis and input requirements
  • Limit states, failure mechanisms, and design criteria
  • Materials properties of FRP laminates and sandwich structures
  • Application of safety, model, and system factors
  • Structural design and analysis, including joints
  • Material and component testing
  • Fabrication, quality assurance, and quality control

Learning objectives

  • Understanding the philosophy, structure, governing principles, and workflow of DNV-ST-C501
  • Ability to plan and execute composite material and component qualification according to DNV-ST-C501

Target group

Engineers and managers working with design, manufacturing, testing, and analysis of FRP  components and structures. Industries include—but are not limited to—offshore, maritime, aquaculture, civil infrastructure, and renewables.

Private/bespoke training

We offer a private/bespoke version of this course for groups of participants (e.g., a company) with specific needs and wants regarding course content and details. This option allows to focus on specific use-cases and provide the course to interested parties who cannot attend the regular course dates. Please take contact to discuss options.
