Process Safety Management foundation course

This course is a comprehensive training on PSM, building on the PSM frameworks developed by the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS-RBPS) and Energy Institute (EI)

Course description

This comprehensive training course will provide an overview of each of the 20 PSM elements. Facilitators will also share best practices on implementing and managing each of these elements.

The course is organized in 4 modules which are offered as classroom and/or virtual sessions. These can also be customized to meet specific client needs.

Learning objectives

In this course, you will:
  • Learn how to identify process safety and major accident hazards in your facilities, and how to assess their risks and define critical controls (barriers)
  • Understand the concepts of static and dynamic barrier management, and how barrier management can be used to analyse process safety and root cause incident investigation 
  • Get hands-on experience with the development of bowtie diagrams
  • Learn the characteristics if different types of barriers: hardware (plant), human (people) and organisational (process)
  • Understand how a PSM system can help manage process safety risks, by providing governance and structure in terms of:
    • Showing commitment of the organisation to process safety
    • Understanding hazards and their associated risk
    • Managing risk in operations, maintenance and when new projects are initiated, and
    • Learning from incidents.
  • Get a detailed overview of the expectations and good-industry practices related to the individual PSM elements of CCPS-RBPS and EI PSM frameworks. This includes good-industry practices for digitalising PSM processes.

Who should attend

The course is designed for those responsible for developing and implementing process safety management in their organisation, but that do not yet have a solid understanding of process safety and good industry practices of PSM. This could include:
  • Plant or unit managers
  • Head of sections or departments (operations, maintenance and inspection, engineering, etc.)
  • Senior engineers (e.g. reliability, inspection).
To PSM and HSE leaders and practitioners the course material should be mostly familiar, though the course could serve as a refresher and update. PSM was conceptualised in the oil and gas industry (including upstream, midstream and downstream), but the principles can also be applied to other industry where major hazards can occur - e.g. chemical industry, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers. If process safety is associated with the accidental loss of energy rather than only hazardous material, the course would be of interest for other industries like utility and energy companies.

Delivery options

This course can be delivered as:
  • Five-day classroom program: The program is based on a mix of interactive lectures, breakout sessions and worked cases. The course is delivered in one working week
  • An alternative, equivalent virtual classroom programme. The duration of the training is longer as it will be part-time and spread over several weeks; the exact duration is flexible, to be discussed and agreed. The training is a mix of plenary online interactive lectures, cases worked on offline by the participants, and online feedback sessions.
