Elastomers in offshore applications

One-day introductory training course on the use and qualification of elastomer seals and other rubber components for offshore applications.

DNV's Technology Centre in Oslo is a leader in the qualification of polymer and composite material solutions for critical applications. This course focuses on the use of elastomers for offshore applications, including seals, packers, bearings, flexible joints, corrosion protection, hoses, and more. Participants will acquire a foundational understanding of elastomer engineering from production to properties and qualification. A focus will be placed on improving material quality and robustness for critical components and infrastructure. Thermoplastics will be alluded to throughout the course due to their overlap with elastomers in key product categories such as seals and hoses.

The following topics will be covered through lectures and group work:

  • Introduction to elastomers
  • Elastomer characteristics, challenges, and failure mechanisms
  • Overlap and differences with thermoplastics
  • Elastomer production
  • Elastomer types and selection of elastomer
  • Qualification of elastomer products
  • Key standards and test methods
  • Specification of elastomer materials
  • The new frontier of CO2 and hydrogen applications

Target group

Engineers and managers working with design, manufacturing, and operation and seeking a general understanding of elastomer materials.
