Competency-Based Interviews

How to design and conduct job specific interviews in order to effectively evaluate competencies.

Objectives

The objectives of the course are to familiarize participants with the steps and the principles involved in designing valid, practical and objective, structured, competency-based interviews, as well as the key communication skills involved in conducting interviews.

 

Entrance requirements

Who should attend: 

Shore and ship staff with a managerial or supervisory role who are involved in evaluating and in managing personnel for development purposes, e.g. managers in general, crew managers, human resource managers and officers.

Duration: 2 day classroom training or three half days virtual classroom training

Participants will get a thorough understanding of the importance of competencies and the way that interviews can be designed to evaluate and rate candidates on job-specific competencies. Interview skills pertaining to the stages before, during and after an interview will be analysed and specific emphasis will be given to the role of verbal and non-verbal communication during an interview, for both the interviewer and the interviewee. Participants will have the chance to practice the taught interviewing skills and methodology for conducting an interview, including remote interviews.

  • Conducting interviews, including remotely.
  • Alternative interview formats
