ResponsibleSteel™ certification

Ensure traceability, verify sustainability and demonstrate responsible steel production and sourcing across your value chain.

Steel plays a critical role in infrastructure, mobility, and industry, but it is also one of the most carbon-intensive materials in the global economy. As demand for sustainable materials rises, the pressure is mounting on the steel sector to decarbonize operations, ensure ethical sourcing, and demonstrate alignment with ESG principles.

Customers, regulators and investors demand credible sustainability performance, steelmakers must show strong ESG governance, ethical sourcing, and measurable reductions in environmental impact. ResponsibleSteel™ certification provides an internationally recognized framework to verify responsible practices, enhance transparency, and strengthen market credibility.

Certification can be a powerful differentiator for steel producers, fabricators, and users alike and offers assurance to buyers, regulators, and investors that ESG principles are embedded in steel supply chains.

Where sites are certified to other standards (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001), overlapping requirements can be integrated into the ResponsibleSteel™ certification process, streamlining audits and reporting.

What is ResponsibleSteel™?

ResponsibleSteel™ is a global, multi‑stakeholder standards and certification initiative dedicated to advancing the socially and environmentally responsible production of net‑zero steel. Its mission is to drive positive change across the steel value chain by promoting responsible practices that benefit people and the planet.

The standard allows for evaluation of a site’s performance against a comprehensive sustainability standard covering environmental, social and governance topics throughout the steel value chain.

How to get certified to ResponsibleSteel™

As an independent third party body, DNV provides ResponsibleSteel™ site certification to verify that steel production and sourcing meet the program’s sustainability and governance requirements. Our services include gap assessments, full audits, on site and remote evaluations, stakeholder engagement verification, and reporting to support continual improvement.

Learn how to get started

  • Organizations begin with a self-evaluation to identify gaps and prepare for the audit.

  • DNV evaluates conformance to the ResponsibleSteel™ Standard through document review, interviews, on site inspections, environmental assessments and verification of sourcing practices.

  • Findings are classified and any required corrective actions are followed up. Once all criteria are met, DNV recommends certification.

  • Certified sites undergo annual surveillance audits and full recertification every three years to ensure ongoing performance and continual improvement.

ResponsibleSteel™ Certification - FAQ

  • ResponsibleSteel™ is a global sustainability standard and certification program that verifies responsible steel production and sourcing across environmental, social and governance areas. It provides an independent framework for assessing steel sites against 13 principles covering climate impact, human rights, labour practices, community engagement and responsible sourcing.

  • Any steelmaking site or related facility involved in processing raw materials or producing steel products can be certified to ResponsibleSteel™. This includes sites across the steel value chain that undergo independent audits to verify conformance with the ResponsibleSteel International Production Standard.

  • Certification to the ResponsibleSteel™ Standard helps companies demonstrate credible ESG performance, strengthen transparency, and gain a competitive advantage with customers and investors seeking responsibly produced steel. It also supports risk reduction, improved operational efficiency, and progress toward decarbonization and sustainability goals.

  • ResponsibleSteel™ certification is valid for three years, after which a full recertification audit is required. Certified sites must also undergo a surveillance audit around the 18‑month mark to maintain their certification status.
