Phast™ and Safeti™ Solid Explosions add-on

Consequence and risk analysis

Phast™ and Safeti™ Solid Explosions add-on

Compliance with industry standards for explosion modelling

The new Solid Explosions model is available as an add-on in Phast and Safeti (version 9.1 or later). It integrates advanced functionality for predicting the effects of solid explosions, utilising:

  • The Kingery & Bulmash model as included in Lees Loss Prevention in the Process Industries (Lees, 2012)
  • The side-on overpressure correlation from the Standard GB/T 37243 Determination method of external safety distance for hazardous chemical production units and storage installations (2019) in China

These solid explosions modelling tools provide calculations of overpressures for explosions at specified distances. The Kingery & Bulmash model also produces results for impulse, duration and arrival time at specified distances. This detailed analysis supports comprehensive consequence and risk assessments.

Advanced explosion modelling for solid releases

The model offers both look-up functionality for calculating explosion results and the ability to determine distances based on specified explosion parametersallowing users to effectively assess various scenarios and their overpressure impacts. The add-on supports solid materials available in our database, including:

  • 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT)
  • Ammonium nitrate
  • Ammonium nitrate mixed with fuel oil (ANFO)
  • Pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN)

These facilitate detailed and accurate modelling of different explosive, solid substances. Users can also define their own solid materials by providing the energy of explosion property, enabling flexible modelling of custom substances.

Additionally, the Safeti Solid Explosions add-on allows users to incorporate the likelihood of such events into the overall risk profile for a facilityenabling comprehensive quantitative risk assessments (QRAs).

Broad application and future enhancements

Designed to enhance risk management in organizations across various industries - including mining, construction, chemical manufacturing, oil and gas, and explosives manufacturing - the solid explosions model provides crucial data for evaluating solid explosion risks.

While the current version focuses on general explosion modelling, future updates will consider additional features, such as expanding the solid materials database and incorporating various additional enhancements following customer feedback and industry insights.
