DNV and marine technology consultancy Dr.techn. Olav Olsen have entered a partnership that brings ShellDesign software for design and post-processing of reinforced concrete shell structures into DNV’s Sesam portfolio.
DNV will resell Dr.techn. Olav Olsen’s ShellDesign software, which is used for analysis, design, and code-check of reinforced concrete shell structures. ShellDesign’s advanced features offer many advantages, such as reducing material quantities used in the design, improving constructability and increasing the efficiency of detail design and engineering, all of which enable cost reduction.
Key tool for offshore wind
ShellDesign is integrated for easy use and visualization of results with DNV GL’s Sesam software. The software package can be used for all types of concrete shell structures, with a key area of growth being the offshore wind sector.

Conceptual development of OO-Star Wind Floater
ShellDesign has a history going back to the 1980s for use of the conventional design method for concrete structures. ShellDesign pioneered with the development of the consistent stiffness method (CSM) in 2006, a practical and efficient method for non-linear structural analysis of reinforced concrete structures. Recently, the software has been used by Dr.techn. Olav Olsen for detailed conceptual development of the OO-Star Wind Floater, using the ShellDesign and Sesam package. Sesam software provides the structural analysis results, while ShellDesign is used for post-processing and design against well-known concrete standards. The results from ShellDesign can be viewed and used within Sesam.
