Certifying a greener future: DNV supports ReNew’s renewable ammonia project in India
DNV collaborated with renewable energy company ReNew to deliver a pre-certification audit under the CertifHy EU RFNBO (Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin) Voluntary Scheme for renewable ammonia. The project built trust in the emerging hydrogen value chain and enabled investment readiness under EU sustainability standards.
Powering progress with trust
As part of India's Green Hydrogen Mission, ReNew, one of the country’s largest renewable energy companies, plans to produce 300,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia annually by 2029 from its facility in Paradip, Odisha. With ambitions to serve international markets, ReNew sought independent verification that its production processes aligned with the CertifHy EU RFNBO Voluntary Scheme. This pre-certification audit ensured compliance with REDII criteria and reassured stakeholders and future off-takers of the project’s credibility and safety.
ReNew selected DNV for its technical expertise and proven track record. Collaboration between DNV’s Supply Chain & Product Assurance team in India and the Renewable Certification team in DNV’s Energy Systems, Denmark enabled a seamless and coordinated review. The scope included:
- Validation of sustainability requirements.
- Validation of GHG emissions calculations.
- Development of the audit report and statement.
Laying the foundation for global readiness
The pre-certification audit demonstrated alignment of ReNew’s project with the certification scheme, and also:
- Built confidence among stakeholders and off-takers.
- Helped avoid financial penalties linked to certification delays.
- Established a clear path to full RFNBO certification.
Following this success, ReNew plans to pursue full certification for the project and is exploring similar pre-certification services for other green products.
