Revision FSSC 22000 – Food Safety Management System

The Foundation FSSC is expected to release the next version of FSSC 22000, following the publication of ISO 22003-1, ISO/TS 22002-x updated series, and ongoing scheme updates. This new version will replace the existing FSSC 22000 Version 6 and is an important development for organizations across the global food supply chain.

According to an update from the Foundation FSSC, the new version of the FSSC 22000 Scheme is expected to be published early in May 2026. 

The scheme revision aims to strengthen food safety management, align with new ISO requirements, integrate sustainability-related topics, and enhance trust throughout the value chain. The updated version is currently under development, with publication expected once stakeholder consultation and benchmarking activities with GFSI have been finalized.

Draft revision of FSSC 22000 – What changes can be expected?

While the detailed scheme requirements may evolve during the consultation process, the following updates are anticipated based on publicly communicated directions from the Foundation FSSC and ongoing changes within ISO standards for food safety:

Key changes likely to be included:

  • The scheme will incorporate the latest requirements for audit duration, audit processes, prerequisites programs, and competence to ensure global consistency.

  • Additional clarity on leadership responsibilities, communication, and measurable cultural indicators is expected.

  • New requirements related to environmental performance and social responsibility may be integrated, reflecting broader industry expectations

  • Topics such as food loss and waste, allergen management, equipment design, pest control, environmental monitoring, and supplier management may be reinforced.  

  • Adjustments to scheme categories and scopes are expected to ensure continued relevance and alignment with current food industry practices and risks.

The Foundation FSSC will publish mandatory transition requirements once the new version is released.  Expectations are that companies will be given a 12-month transition period to implement the new version from the time of publication.

We recommend that organizations start preparing early to secure a smooth transition. Key steps include:

  1. Review the published changes as soon as the new version becomes available.
  2. Ensure relevant personnel receive training on updated requirements.
  3. Conduct a gap assessment to identify areas requiring adjustments in your existing food safety management system.
  4. Implement necessary updates to processes, documentation, monitoring, and cultural practices.
  5. Plan the timing of your transition audit to ensure continuous certification and compliance.
