Our approach

DNV is ready to help you make strategic decisions that will ensure your pipeline portfolio is safe, reliable, and compliant over the next 25 years and beyond. We see two key opportunities.

First, you can safely extend the life of your existing pipelines. There are approximately 2.4 million miles of pipeline in North Arica – and some of these assets were installed more than 60 years ago! DNV is your go-to source for pipeline integrity services. We have been assuring safe and profitable pipeline operations for more than 50 years

Second, you can retrofit existing oil and gas pipelines to safely transport new feedstock like hydrogen, ammonia, CO2, and renewable liquid products. Our world-class materials testing laboratory and technology center in Columbus, Ohio, has the capabilities to determine the blend of new feedstock you can safely introduce into your existing pipelines.

300+ experts working at our world-class laboratories and technology centers around the world are ready to ensure your pipeline assets can capitalize on the $12 trillion energy transition opportunity.

The core services we offer include:

  • Qualification of Hydrogen for Pipelines
  • Materials testing for transport of Ammonia, Hydrogen, CO2, RNG, and SAF
  • Hydraulics & Flow assurance
  • Corrosion
  •  Pipeline Integrity
  • 24/7 Failure Investigation
  • Welding Consulting

Solutions for the biggest industry challenges

Integrity

Loss of primary containmentLeveraging data analytics and deep industry expertise, we proactively identify and mitigate threats to prevent pipeline failures. We provide comprehensive safety assessments for hazards like corrosion and cracking, ensuring regulatory compliance, and offering strategies for effective control or elimination.

Ageing pipelines

Our Energy Transition Outlook forecasts that oil and gas will still play a big role in our energy mix, and that low and zero carbon solutions will capture more market share. Pipelines are needed to transport an evolving mix of liquid products across the country. Pipeline operators must act now to prepare their assets for a longer operating life to meet America’s growing energy demand.

Examples of our work

H2 blending study

The biggest hydrogen blending study to date

We are analyzing the gas supply chain, from hydrogen injection to end-user delivery. Our findings contribute to developing codes and standards for safe hydrogen transport, paving the way for a cleaner energy future.

Unique cracking case

A mystery pipeline failure that put the license to operate at risk

DNV identified a new stress corrosion cracking threat on above-ground carbon steel pipelines.  A customer experienced a series of in-service leaks on an above-ground, mineral wool insulated, oil emulsion pipeline that exhibited an unconventional cracking morphology.  Our experts conducted a technical root cause analysis to identify the cause of cracking and contributing factors leading to the development of this unique cracking environment beneath a layer of mineral wool insulation.

Pipeline overpressure testing

Expertise in capacity, steady state, transient, and surge analyses

We assisted a customer to investigate unusual pressure spikes in their studies, arising from vapor column collapse and check valve responses. We developed a hydraulic simulation of the system, and our transient and surge analysis showed that the pressure spikes were not real. Our investigation led to the discovery that one of their check valves needed to be replaced due to mechanical damage.

DNV asset life extension work

We are using our CGReal analysis to assess more than 100 pipelines. DNV is combining our unrivalled engineering judgement with statistical analyses to identify and determine if there is corrosion growth and calculate reliable rates, giving operators the knowledge and confidence they need to optimize ILI dig programs.

  • Giving operators a clear picture on asset life and integrity
