The consequences of structural failure in submarine pipelines are severe for the environment and significantly disrupt the production and transportation of hydrogen, oil and gas - including the safe handling of CO₂ in carbon capture and storage systems.
For decades, DNV standards and recommended practices have guided the industry in designing, installing and operating safe and cost-efficient submarine pipelines — with many remaining in service for up to 20 years.
The DNV Subsea Toolkit includes a digital implementation of DNV-ST-F101 and multiple recommended practices. It supports owners and designers to document compliance with the DNV standards and recommended practices and to optimize the design for cost and performance.
In today’s offshore field developments, significant investment is spent on designing, modelling and analysing the submarine pipelines. This represents a substantial financial commitment to offshore oil and gas production. Using the DNV Subsea Toolkit, it is possible to confidently build and assess the structural behaviour of submarine pipelines. This allows you to guarantee that your structural design conforms to the DNV-ST-F101.
The DNV Subsea Toolkit is applicable during design and operation throughout the lifetime of a submarine pipeline since the conditions for corrosion, material degradation and free-spans will change over time.
We believe success relies on the ability to have engineering workflows that allow for continuous increase in the fidelity of analytical data models and analyses as the pipeline project matures. From options study through conceptual design, basic design and detailed design, this concept yields confidence in the compliance, safety and structural integrity of new and ageing submarine pipelines in a cost-effective way.
DNV Subsea Toolkit
Software supporting the structural design and operation of submarine pipelines according to DNV standards and recommended practices.
DNV has developed its Subsea Toolkit for decades to simplify and speed up the engineering task to design submarine pipelines conforming with the DNV standards and recommended practices. This means that owners and designers can use existing and validated commercial software instead of making their own implementation of the DNV standards and recommended practices.
The software facilitates a complete and user-friendly process covering all the phases in the structural design of submarine pipelines from early phase studies through operation to lifetime extensions. For all phases, analyses can be carried out with focus on design iterations to ease the work to optimize the design to conform with DNV standard.
The DNV Subsea Toolkit is applicable for the design and operation of oil and gas gathering pipelines between wellhead and production platform, oil and gas water injection pipelines, oil and gas transport pipelines and offshore wind hydrogen transport pipeline. The toolkit also includes functionality to calculate structural capacity and fatigue of offshore umbilicals, power cables and flexible pipelines.
Great for:
Ultimate Limit State design code checks in compliance with DNV-ST-F101 Submarine Pipeline Systems. Both minimum required pipeline wall thickness for given conditions as well as a utilization based on a given wall thickness are calculated. Buckling arrestors are calculated too
Calculate free span fatigue life due to Vortex Induced Vibrations (VIV), direct wave action and cross-flow vibrations induced by wave according to DNV-RP-F105 Free Spanning Pipelines. The allowable free span length is calculated based on sensitivity analyses.
Static and time domain dynamic on-bottom stability design of submarine pipelines according to DNV-RP-F109 On-Bottom Stability Design of Submarine Pipelines, Cables and Umbilicals. The submarine pipeline dimensions, and weight are calculated by specifying wall thickness, cut back length, material densities and soil properties
Design and verification of global buckling potential for submarine pipelines in compliance with DNV-RP-F110 Global Buckling of Submarine Pipelines. Global buckling assessment both for exposed pipeline on even seabed and buried pipelines
Assessment of corroded pipelines in compliance with DNV-RP-F101 Corroded Pipelines (Part A). Both single and multiple defects can be handled
Manage the consequences of sand production and erosion through the different stages of design and operation of oil and gas production facilities according to DNV-RP-O501 Managing Sand Production and Erosion
Concept evaluation and decision making for technical support during field developments based on easy-to-use calculation for quick assessments of submarine pipelines. This includes simplified design checks according to DNV-ST-F101, DNV-RP-F105 and DNV-RP-F109.
PILSS lets us quickly assess field-wide stability without needing to redesign the cable - critical when time and flexibility are limited
