Updated legacy GL rules and guidelines

Legacy GL rules and guidelines have been published and will come into force on 1 July 2015.

The updated legacy GL rules and guidelines are:

  • Classification and Surveys (I-0)
  • Hull Structures (I-1-1)
  • Machinery Installations (I-1-2)
  • Structural Rules for Container Ships (I-1-5)
  • Guidelines for Ship Recycling Related Certification Processes (VI-12-2)

Brief summaries of the relevant changes and amendments in the above legacy GL rules and guidelines are given in following.

Updated legacy GL Rules for Classification and Surveys (I-0)

With reference to the type notation PASSENGER YACHT in Section 2 “Classification” of these Rules a new category notation PY3 has been introduced in addition to the existing yacht category notations PY0, PY1 and PY2. The new notation PY3 relates to yachts not engaged in commercial use as defined in the Passenger Yacht Code.

In B.1.3.5 of Section 3 “Surveys – General Requirements” a text has been added to reflect an identical amendment in the IACS UR Z7 and Z10 series which specifies commencement of new period of class regarding laid-up or out of service vessels.

Updated editions of the legacy GL Seagoing Ship Rules for Hull Structures (I-1-1) and Structural Rules for Container Ships (I-1-5)

The following rule amendments have been incorporated in both of the above rules:

The requirements for ultimate strength calculation regarding flooded condition have been removed from Section 5 “Longitudinal Strength” as input values for ULS are not applicable due to probabilistic damage stability.

References in F.1.3.2 and G.1.3.2 of Section 18 “Equipment” have been updated to the correct ISO standard 13795 for welded steel bollards for seagoing vessels as required by Corr. 1 to Rev. 3 of IACS UR A2 “Shipboard fittings and supporting hull structures associated with towing and mooring on conventional vessels”

The following adaptions to IACS Unified requirements are only applicable for the Rules I-1-1:

In Section 23 “Bulk Carriers, Ore Carriers and Ships with Strengthenings for Bulk Cargo and Heavy Cargo” Rev. 9 of IACS UR S17 “Longitudinal Strength of Hull Girder in Flooded Condition for Non-CSR Bulk Carriers” has been implemented together with Rev. 6 of UR S20 “Evaluation of Allowable Hold Loading for Non-CSR Bulk Carriers Considering Hold Flooding”. This provides clarification of longitudinal strength requirements for specified flooded conditions applicable to non-CSR bulk carriers in addition to those specified in Section 5, B.

Also Rev. 9 of IACS UR S18 “Evaluation of Scantlings of Corrugated Transverse Watertight Bulkheads in Non-CSR Bulk Carriers Considering Hold Flooding” has been incorporated.

Updated legacy GL Rules for Machinery Installations (I-1-2)

In Section 2 “Internal Combustion Engines and Air Compressors” of these Rules, Table 2.7 has been updated due to implementation of revised IACS UR M10 “Protection of internal combustion engines against crankcase explosions”, UR M35 “Alarms, remote indications and safeguards for main reciprocating internal combustion engines installed in unattended machinery spaces” and UR M36 “Alarms and safeguards for auxiliary reciprocating internal combustion engines driving generators in unattended machinery spaces”. This clarifies required action following oil mist detector alarm on diesel engines.

Furthermore, definitions and rule requirements relating to dangerous goods in packaged form and solid bulk cargoes in Sub-Sections P. and Q. of Section 12 “Fire Protection and Fire Extinguishing Equipment / Fire Prevention“ have been aligned with SOLAS II-2/19.2.2.1 as well as IMSBC and IMDG Codes.

Updated legacy GL Guidelines for Ship Recycling Related Certification Processes (VI-12-2)

With the update of these Guidelines the former requirement of a “pre-approval” has been removed to be in line with the Hongkong Convention.
