The new Nor-Shipping charity Fun Run

The global maritime charity The Mission to Seafarers has organized a new 5km Fun Run in partnership with Nor-Shipping to raise money for crew members around the world. DNV GL is Diamond sponsor of this event, and encourages all Nor-Shipping visitors to sign up for the race, which takes place on the 1st of June.

The run rounds off the official launch day of Nor-Shipping and starts in Oslo’s city centre at 6.30pm. For the first half of the route runners will follow the capital’s coastline with wonderful views out to sea, before passing through the city centre and crossing the finish line at the Maritime Museum. The iconic museum will also be the backdrop for the awards ceremony

“The Mission to Seafarers makes an essential contribution to the welfare of crew members around the world. Being the lead supporter of the Fun Run was a great opportunity for us at DNV GL to support their efforts,” says Tor E. Svensen, CEO of DNV GL – Maritime. “I would like to invite Nor-Shipping visitors to sign up, join the run and support the important work of The Mission to Seafarers”, he adds.

Craig Eason’s idea

The Nor-Shipping Fun Run is the brainchild of Craig Eason, Deputy Editor of global maritime intelligence provider Lloyd’s List. “As an ex-seafarer, I have been looking for the right excuse to create a run such as this at Nor-Shipping for a number of years, and now we have it. Those coming to large industry events such as Nor-Shipping should never forget the importance of the people who work on board ships and ensure the industry remains the lifeblood of global trade,” he says.

“Here at Nor-Shipping we are celebrating our 50th birthday this year and we are very happy to support The Mission to Seafarers and Lloyd’s List with the Fun Run. Seafarers and their families are at the heart of the global maritime world and the proceeds from this event can make a real difference to those crews that can face hardship and distress in the world’s remote ports,” Vidar Pederstad, Nor-Shipping Director, says.

In addition to the money generated by the runners, the Fun Run is also being sponsored by many companies in the maritime industry.
