DNV’s Synergi Pipeline is being implemented at NGC to support safe and efficient pipeline operations
Since 1975, The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (NGC) has played a pivotal role in the energy sector of Trinidad and Tobago through the aggregation, processing, transportation, and distribution of natural gas. Synergi Pipeline, the pipeline integrity management software solution from DNV, enables safe and efficient pipeline operations, documents risks such as pipeline corrosion, tracks regulatory compliance and gives a clear overview of the asset integrity management (AIM) of pipelines and gas distribution network components.
NGC had been using a legacy software from DNV (Silverpipe) since 2011 to work smarter and more efficiently.
Best in class
“One of our mission statements is trying to be best in class,” says Lyndon Mohammed, Team Lead (Acting), Integrity Management and Process Safety Assurance at NGC. “That led us again down the road of choosing DNV, with the new version of Synergi Pipeline.”
The company is now upgrading to the latest release of Synergi Pipeline software. “One of the benefits of the upgrade will be more efficient and comprehensive integration of pipeline knowledge from around the company,” says Tony Alfano, Pipeline Product Line Director, DNV.
Ensuring safety and integrity
“Synergi provides us with the holistic risk classification of NGC’s transmission and distribution pipelines,” says Saalya Rickhi-Ramjattan, Manager, Integrity Management and Process Safety Assurance at NGC. “It allows us to intervene in maintenance and engineering projects, ensuring the safety of the public and our personnel, enabling us to maintain pipeline integrity and business continuity,” says Rickhi-Ramjattan.
The turmoil of 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic brought into focus just how essential it is to safeguard the physical assets of the gas system in order to fuel the country and to sustain essential services, as natural gas is the primary fuel for the generation of electricity in Trinidad & Tobago. NGC’s asset integrity management framework, adopted in 2019, is a key element to preserve the value and safety of those assets.
Complete risk picture
Another benefit of the upgrade is that NGC will be able to share a complete risk picture across the organization for use in many different types of projects.
“We are now using Synergi results and sharing it with other departments in the company,” says Mr. Mohammed. “Initially it was really driving our integrity management plans, now it’s gone further, including inspections, reassessments, et cetera. We are using it for prioritizing on projects and this is leading to cost savings,” he says.
As its name implies, the software brings in the full effect of synergies. “Synergi Pipeline really does that for us,” says Mr. Mohammed.
