How do I calculate strength for marine gear considering ice-class rule requirements?

Gear rating tool supporting ice-class

Nauticus Gear Rating tool supports both main class and ice-class (FSICR and IACS Polar ice class) strength calculation for marine propulsion systems. It calculates the tooth strength from the following four aspects:

  • Tooth root strength check
  • Surface durability calculation
  • Sub surface fatigue calculation
  • Scuffing load capacity calculation

Sub-surface fatigue commonly happens on large bevel gear (mn>16). DNV GL, as far as now, is the only class society that has developed the calculation method and criteria to prevent such damages.  It is also implemented in the Nauticus Gear Rating tool.
