Training course: HVDC Power cables

This training course will focus on HVDC transmission, primarily on the underground and submarine power cables and its accessories.

Developments like increasing usage of renewable energy sources and increasing demand for electricity in modern society is forcing transmission (system) operators to invest in connections with greater capacity and/or length. Using only AC would pose significant problems, related to transmission losses and principle length limitations. The development of HVDC transmission systems has thus become increasingly important in recent years, as these systems can transmit large amounts of power over long distances with lower losses.

Another obvious use of HVDC cables is for submarine applications, enabling e.g. large interconnectors and connections to more distant wind farms.

This course will address and highlight the entire HVDC cable life cycle, providing participants with the confidence to tackle HVDC related issues in their work.

General examples of justification for HVDC application over HVAC are:

■ Overall costs

■ High transmission capacity

■ Coupling asynchronous grids (between 50 and 60 Hz systems, between different grids)

■ Long length of connection

■ Control of power flows

■ Smaller trenches

■ Lower losses

■ Different magnetic fields/induced voltages

Your benefits

■ An understanding of the reasons for and benefits of using HVDC power cables

■ An understanding of the most important parameters during the design, installation and commissioning of HVDC underground cables

■ Knowledge of the methods to mitigate the possibility of failures

■ Insight into how to develop your set of requirements, methods and techniques

■ A record of completion from DNV GL after successful completion of the course, giving customers greater confidence in your abilities.

For whom?

Anyone involved or interested in HVDC power cables. This involves engineers and staff from utilities, project developers, asset owners, manufacturers, service providers, insurance companies, investors, etc. We assume that participants have some basic knowledge of power cables (otherwise, following DNV GL’s “Power cables in general” course is recommended).
