DNV and RSI complete study on decarbonizing the short sea dry bulk fleet

Amid increasing pressure on shipping to achieve the IMO 2050 decarbonization targets, the Responsible Shipping Initiative (RSI) and DNV have completed a new study: "Decarbonization of the short sea dry bulk fleet", co-funded by the Swedish Transport Administration. The study finds that while Swedish cargo owners and charterers are committed to greener practices, a lack of regulatory and economic incentives for smaller tonnage is hindering their progress.

IMO III 11: Finalized guidance on remote surveys, audits and verifications

The 11th session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Implementation of IMO Instruments (III 11) took place from 21 to 25 July 2025. The Sub-Committee completed guidance on remote surveys, ISM audits and ISPS verifications and added Industrial Personnel (IP) Code items to the harmonized survey guidelines. It also considered marine safety investigation reports, identifying parametric rolling, fire safety in self-unloading bulk carriers and inflatable lifejackets for consideration.

Ban on discharge of water from open loop EGCSS in coastal waters of the north-west Europe from 1 July 2027

The 16 OSPAR contracting parties have agreed to phase out discharge from EGCSs in coastal waters of the European north-east Atlantic. Restrictions on open loop discharge are to take effect from 1 July 2027, and closed loop discharge from 1 July 2029. DNV awards GASA certificate to MOL, MISC, PETRONAS and SDARI for new LCO2 carrier design

DNV has awarded a General Approval for Ship Application (GASA) certificate to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., (MOL), MISC Berhad (MISC), PETRONAS CCS Ventures Sdn. Bhd. (PCCSV) and Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI), for their jointly-developed 62,000 cubic metres (cbm) liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier design. This milestone builds upon an Approval in Principle (AiP) awarded by DNV in 2023 and highlights the growing role of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Asia’s decarbonization efforts.

IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 110)

2025. The session adopted SOLAS amendments to improve the safety of transfer arrangements for pilots and other personnel embarking and disembarking ships, and made significant progress on a new non-mandatory code of safety for autonomous ships (MASS Code). A review of regulatory safety barriers to alternative fuels and new technologies was concluded and measures to address those barriers were initiated, aiming to support the reduction of GHG emissions from ships from a safety perspective.
