GPM is now monitoring a portfolio of 185 solar power plants (in production and under construction), with over 4GW of solar power produced in the country. Recently, GPM was chosen to manage, control and monitor a 104-MWp Chilean solar plant operated by Spanish independent power producer (IPP) Opdenergy Holding SA. Named Sol de los Andes, the photovoltaic (PV) park consists of over 239,000 bifacial PV modules.
Helping Chile achieve its climate goals
Last autumn, Chile’s constituent assembly approved a declaration that recognizes that “the new constitution is written in a context of Climate and Ecological Emergency and therefore [must include] guarantees of environmental […] mitigation, adaptation and transformation to face the climate and ecosystem crisis.” However, Chile still relies heavily on fossil fuels and so far depends to a great degree on negative emissions by its forest mass to reach its net-zero target.
DNV research evaluates that wind power generation increased by 31% between 2017 and 2021 in Chile, and solar power generation by 39%, offsetting the drop in hydraulic generation. Although thermal and fossil fuel power generation still accounted for over 56% of all electricity produced in the country in 2021 (and was still slowly increasing), the steady growth of renewables in the energy mix warrants an optimistic outlook on the future.
Since 2014, and with the aim of driving the energy transition, GPM has been committed to increasing its presence in the Latin American market, which currently has a portfolio of 15GW of solar and wind energy in Iberia and Latin America, and 500 installations in 20 countries. GPM now holds a 45% share in Chile’s solar PV market. GPM has participated in some large projects that has provided improved access to renewable energy and avoided the exposure of thousands of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
