Projects
Since the publication of the first version of DNV-CG-0264 DNV has been involved in a wide range of autoremote ships projects. We had projects with vessels of many types, different operations and various autonomy goals. Some of our latest achievements are available in the press releases below.

Approval in Principle for Kongsberg Maritime Chief to Shore
In June 2024, Kongsberg Maritime has received Approval in Principle from classification society DNV to enable a key role to be transferred from a ship to a shore-based control centre, marking a significant step in the journey towards uncrewed vessel operations.
The move will enable the role of Chief Engineer to be located in a Remote Operations Centre (ROC), where the duties can be carried out from a desk-based workstation, instead of onboard a vessel.
Remote Operations Centre collaboration
In October 2023, DNV and Samsung Heavy Industries’ signed an MoU for the collaboration to drive innovation and redefine the future of marine transportation.
The joint project seeks to develop the SHI's Remote Operation Centre (ROC) for MASS, advance the future of autonomous shipping by harnessing cutting-edge technology, including the Internet of Things (IoT) and cybersecurity platforms, and ensure safe and smooth operations.
HiNAS Control autonomous navigation system
In September 2023, DNV granted a design verification report (DVR) for the AI-based autonomous navigation system "HiNAS Control". This system was a joint project between Avikus, a navigation specialist, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.
This employs artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) to integrate data from different navigation tools. This advanced technology enables ships to autonomously avoid collisions while maintaining optimal routes and speeds. By assisting navigators, it reduces fatigue and contributes to safer voyages, better fuel efficiency, and fewer maritime accidents and emissions.
Following the evaluation, the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR) has also given an Approval in Principle (AiP) for this system.
Memorandum of understanding to develop autonomous ship technology
At Gastech 2022, DNV signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with maritime industry technology leaders HHI, AVIKUS and Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR) to collaborate on autonomous ship technology developments.
