Next generation blade certification standard

Joint Industry Project

DNV runs a Joint Industry Project to develop a standard approach to detect blade damages

Challenge

As a wind turbine developer, owner and operator, you want to understand the level of risk and performance of the turbines you are investing in. The pace of modern wind turbine development is very fast and industry standards need to keep pace with changing trends and technologies.

Solution

Develop a standard approach for the evaluation of data-driven techniques used to detect blade damages. The result will be a standard that does not compete with IEC 61400-5, but instead is tailored to large flexible blades for modern multi-megawatt turbines.

Benefits

  • Understanding about the failure modes and defects that are experienced in service
  • Better quantification of risk and empowering the fidelity of the design analyses and the performance of the test blade
  • Improvement of developers’, owners’ and operators’ judgement involved when interpreting the standards and the certification documentation provided by the manufacturers

Value

  1. Improved quality design standard and accompanying recommended practice
  2. Improved communication on blade quality
  3. Education of developers, owners and operators
