Why trust matters 

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologyies will play a significant role on the road to a low carbon society – but only if trust in these new technologies is assured.

What is the story? 

Ensuring the highest safety standards for CCS will require tools that simulate what actually happens if accidents occur, both as the basis for design, and to mitigate the consequences of a release. 

Norway’s Equinor is a CCS leader. Needing reliable consequence models for safety assessments, design of barriers and documentation, Equinor has partnered with DNV in the development of DNV’s KFX™ CO2 computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software.

To make the most cost-efficient design decisions without compromising on safety, it is necessary to have as detailed simulations as possible. DNV is committed to collaborate closely with customers in the areas of hydrogen safety, CO2, ammonia and liquefied natural gas, enabling the accelerated energy transition journey.

KFX CO2 supports a new level of safety for handling captured CO2, which is usually transported and stored in liquid or supercritical state. It is much heavier than air and a release of concentrated CO2 will therefore typically follow the contours of the terrain and accumulate in pits, valleys and lower-lying grounds. KFX CO2’s detailed simulation capabilities help operators take into account complex thermodynamics and interaction with the terrain.
