Navigational Assessments and Audits

This course aims to train personnel who are required to demonstrate that they are adequately trained and qualified to conduct navigational assessments and audits, as per TMSA 3 - Element 5 Navigational Safety.

Objectives

Navigating a vessel constitutes a significant risk. Participants in this course will learn how to use the navigation audit and assessment as a tool to improve the Navigational process and Bridge team performance, while also satisfying charterers’ Bulk carriers and Tankers requirements, such as TMSA 3, Element 5 Navigational Safety.

This course aims to train personnel who are required to demonstrate that they are adequately trained and qualified to conduct navigation audits and assessments.

Entrance requirements

Nautical background (Watch-keeping experience is also recommended)

Who should attend:
Personnel who are required to demonstrate they are adequately trained and qualified to conduct navigational assessments and audits (TMSA 3 Element 5), Superintendents, Fleet Managers, Designated Persons, Masters and Senior Officers. Marine consultants, surveyors and inspectors.

Duration: 8-12 hours depending on delivery mode.

A major navigational incident is among the biggest financial and existential risks for a ship owner. While every company has a set of robust navigation and bridge procedures and checklists, it is most essential that these procedures are effectively implemented by the Bridge team to achieve 'zero' failure.

Conducting good navigation audits and assessments would identify gaps in the procedures, people and equipment, thus leading to likely improvements and enhancements of the navigation process.

Course participants will become aware of gaps that could lead to unsafe navigational practices. The importance of the human element in the navigational process and the use of Competency assessment as a tool to monitor and improve individual skills, as well as those of the Bridge team, is also discussed.

This course draws attention to good navigation audit practices, with emphasis on current expectations of the industry.

The course focuses on:

  • Background of navigation audits and assessments
  • Crew development
  • Navigation audit and assessment process
  • Operation and maintenance of bridge equipment
  • Bridge procedures
  • Bridge team management and organisation
  • Analysis of navigation audit and assessment
