For many areas beyond the reach of the central grid, mini-grids are the most cost-effective solution for extending electrical service in rural areas. Falling costs and rising investment have seen a rush of investment into this space throughout Sub-saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. This webinar will present DNV’s experience developing 125 microgrid sites in Zambia under a grant from United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) and explore how this experience can inform the mini-grid site development process in other countries. Our presenters, who will include the DNV Energy Access team and a representative from TESCO, the survey firm DNV partnered with in Zambia, focus on:
- Designing an appropriate site evaluation criteria
- Coordinating field work for accurate and efficient surveys
- Preliminary mini-grid design
- Navigating the political and regulatory landscape of mini-grid deployment
