Enabling confidence - addressing uncertainty in risk assessments

In recent years, regulators have put increasing emphasis on addressing uncertainty in risk assessments, in order to achieve better risk understanding, a prerequisite for improving safety. The challenge is that addressing uncertainty may be perceived as creating uncertainty; it may not be obvious how more focus on uncertainty adds value in a decision-making process.

The purpose of this position paper is to explain that uncertainty is an instrumental part of risk, and that assessing and communicating uncertainty can help clients tackle safety-critical decisions with more confidence.
