Diploma for maritime executives – unique programme offering academic and research expertise combined with best practise in the industry

A new Postgraduate Diploma in Executive Maritime Management offered by the World Maritime University (WMU) and DNV GL Maritime Academy covers some of the key issues in the maritime industry and provides managers with comprehensive knowledge that enable them to retain their competitive edge.

The diploma addresses current topics that are critical to the market and provides a holistic education for maritime managers. The five modules cover key issues in the maritime industry, including safety, technology, financial, environmental and leadership issues. They have been selected to reflect challenges and questions that maritime managers have to cope with today.

Finding solutions at a managerial level is not always easy. Therefore in this diploma programme professionals from academia and industry have joined forces. This strength together with a well-balanced study programme will support solution-finding and a broader understanding of the issues. Specially for the distance learning format new concepts and the latest technological solutions have been considered. In addition to online self-study sessions collaboration tools for direct exchange with your fellow students and the respective experts are available to enhance the learning outcomes. Overview – the modules

Module 1: Setting the Scene: Contemporary Global Maritime Regulatory and Management Issues in the Shipping Sector

Learn more about maritime economics, markets challenges and trends, leadership culture and public relations. Close this module with maritime and ocean governance and sustainability matters.

Module 2: Remaining Competitive in a Changing Market: Strategic Financial Tools

Learn more about shipping markets, capital budgeting, financial analysis and projects, loans and bank syndication, credit policy and alternative sources of ship financing

Module 3: Managing Resources: Human Resource Management, Organisational Processes and Leadership in a Maritime Context

Learn more about organizational structures, culture and learning, group and organization processes, HR management principles, labour law, management of change and leadership concepts.

Module 4: Mastering Complexity: Effective Management of Safety, Security and Risk

Learn more about the human element, risk assessment in shipping, risk management and accident investigation, IMO tools and the complexity and applications safety.

Module 5: Staying Ahead of the Curve: Maritime Environmental Technology, Sustainability and Challenges

Learn more about environmental awareness in a market context, energy efficiency, alternative fuels, ballast water and bio-fouling and innovation and future shipping.

Benefit from flexible delivery options

In the rapidly changing maritime industry managers have to be flexible. Flexibility in the way you study is therefore also essential. The Postgraduate Diploma is offered with unique delivery options that meets best the individual needs:

  • As a pure distance-learning programme with pre-recorded videos on an e-learning platform, self-assessments and collaboration tools
  • As a pure open-enrolment classroom-based learning programme with fellow students with live instructors, face-to-face discussions, hands-on exercises and access to online material in selected DNV GL Maritime Academies worldwide
  • As a combination of distance-learning and classroom-based learning programme for each module in the programme

The programme lasts for eleven months, with a new module starting approximately every eight weeks.

When participants successfully complete the five modules of the Diploma, they will be invited to attend the annual WMU Graduation Ceremony in Malmö, Sweden, where degrees are conferred by the Chancellor of WMU, the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)
