Managing the risk of blackouts

Step change in safety

To support owners and operators in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of their fleet, DNV GL prepared a guidance paper with recommendations and best practices from the passenger industry and other maritime segments. The guideline follows a stepwise approach for managing the risks of blackout and resulting loss of propulsion in operation as well as for newbuilds.

Blackouts should no longer be considered unfortunate or rare events. Through implementing the best practices and recommendations from this guidance paper, the industry can significantly reduce the risks of blackout and loss of propulsion, and thereby take a step change to improving safety.

Five steps to manage the risks of blackout

DNV GL proposes five steps to manage the risk of blackout and consequential loss of propulsion. These steps are based on a study of incident statistics, literature reviews, workshop with key industry operators and collaboration with expert resources.
