DNV’s global and Australian energy transition insights

DNV Energy Transition Outlook (ETO) offers key insights into global and Australian energy shifts. This presentation highlights key trends in hydrocarbons, hydrogen, ammonia, and CCS and DNV’s role in supporting safe, reliable transitions for our customers across the evolving energy landscape.

09:45 - 10:15

The approval journey – some tips, tricks and pitfalls to avoid

Everybody involved in the Energy Transition wants new and existing projects to be safe.  How you do it - and how you show it to the Safety Regulator is where problems arise. The Safety Regulator has requirements that affect everything from engineering design through to the people who use and work at the facility over the whole life of plant.  Gaining - and then keeping - your safety approval is often a complex, time-consuming and confusing process to the uninitiated. If done incorrectly, it can cause big long term impacts to cost, schedule and reputation.  But there are ways to mitigate the risks. Let's talk about your journey with the Safety Regulator.

DNV Risk Products (Phast/Safeti and KFX/EXSIM) updates and roadmap

Phast/Safeti and KFX/EXSIM are industry-standard tools for safety and risk analysis for major hazard facilities. This presentation will highlight key updates from the past year and outline our roadmap for the year ahead. Topics include consequence modelling with Phast CFD, transport route model enhancements, IRPA in Safeti, integration of CFD data into QRA, solid and dust explosion modelling, improved pipeline release modelling, and the latest developments in KFX/EXSIM. These advancements support more accurate, reliable, and comprehensive safety risk analyses to meet evolving industry needs.

Phast model validation through large-scale testing at DNV’s Spadeadam research and testing facilities

Phast, the industry-standard consequence modelling software, is trusted by over 1,000 companies worldwide. For over 40 years, its models have been rigorously validated through large-scale testing at DNV’s Spadeadam site. This presentation highlights validation efforts for hydrocarbons, hydrogen, CO2, and more, ensuring accuracy and reliability across applications.

The road to green steel - safety and risk considerations

Steelmaking contributes 8% of global GHG emissions. Transitioning from natural gas to 100% hydrogen in direct reduced iron (DRI) pathway is a promising short-term decarbonisation strategy. This presentation examines hydrogen-based steelmaking, discussing safety concerns and risk mitigation to support the safe adoption of green steel technologies for climate targets.

13:45 - 14:15

Customer case study - A collaboration resulting in taking QRA to the next level

In 2018 DNV Plant Risk solutions were approached by a key customer in the industry, who were looking to improve their internal QRA tool. Over the next 5 years we went from a proof of concept to several Safeti releases, which have been rolled out throughout the customer’s organization.

14:15 - 14:45

Ammonia dispersion and mitigation using water curtains

Ammonia is a key hydrogen carrier and alternative marine fuel, but its toxicity presents safety challenges. This presentation outlines recommended methodologies for accurate ammonia dispersion modelling and mitigation using water curtains, based on findings from DNV’s latest ammonia Joint Industry Project (JIP) with industry partners.

15:00 - 15:30

Advanced CO2 dispersion modelling for safe CCS

CCS is advancing rapidly, with over 500 projects underway globally. This presentation addresses safety considerations for managing large quantity of CO2 and showcases advanced dispersion modelling techniques for both atmospheric and subsea releases to support safe CCS projects.

15:30 - 16:00

Improved hydrogen explosion modelling in EXSIM

Hydrogen is a key emerging energy source, but its flammability presents explosion risks. DNV’s EXSIM software enables advanced CFD-based explosion modelling, validated against hydrogen experiments with high accuracy. This presentation outlines the methodology and showcases case studies demonstrating EXSIM’s capabilities in modelling hydrogen explosions effectively.

16:00 - 16:30

Advanced performance forecasting and RAM analysis for hydrogen, ammonia and CCS projects

With the rise of hydrogen, ammonia, and CCS projects, performance forecasting and RAM analysis are becoming increasingly vital. DNV’s Maros and Taro software, proven in oil and gas, now support these sectors by optimizing CAPEX/OPEX, improving availability, and enhancing decision-making across the asset lifecycle—from design to decommissioning.
