Financing the energy transition

Repower or retire? Rethinking wind farm lifecycles

Insights for the finance community

Join us for a 1-hour event on 6 November in Frankfurt or via live stream.

Date:  6 November 2025
Time: 09:00 AM
Place: Frankfurt Marriott Hotel, Hamburger Allee 2, 60486 Frankfurt

As part of our Financing the Energy Transition series, this upcoming event will explore potential strategies for ageing onshore wind farms.

Hosted in Frankfurt and available via live stream, the session offers a candid fireside chat with experts who bring diverse perspectives and practical experiences from across the wind value chain.

Our fireside chat will feature speakers from Astris Finance, Deutsche Bank, wpd Windmanager and DNV.

DNV’s Energy Transition Outlook 2024 reveals that by 2050, total global wind power capacity will be 6.3 TW, from 1.0 TW in 2023, and constitute a little less than one-fourth of total grid-connected capacity. The first onshore wind farms – as we know them today – went into operation in the 80s. The development since then was steep one, growing in number of turbines, name plate capacity and other areas. These days, developments - differing per region - are sometimes tampered by factors like grid constraints, public resistance and lack of clear regulations, among others.

The learning curve of how to operate those wind farms has been steep as well, leading to varying views on lifetime extension. What is the optimal strategy for aging wind farms— could repowering be a viable alternative to decommissioning? How would this affect the energy yield, and can extended operation justify added OpEx?

Join us for a candid fireside chat where industry experts will share unfiltered insights into the current realities, the challenges ahead, and wind energy potential arising from operational farms in the future energy landscape.
