Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is difficult to detect and monitor despite advances in microbiological characterization methods. A three-year Joint Industry Project for MIC biomarker discovery commenced on Oct 31, 2023 with seven oil and gas upstream and midstream operators. This project aims to discover biomarkers for detection and monitoring of MIC and develop key performance indicators to translate field biomarker concentrations to integrity threats.

Participating companies will select specific oil field assets with a history of MIC or service conditions of particular interest for laboratory simulation in the APES. Using waters collected from these operating assets, the APES platform will then generate samples for biomarker discovery that will be further ‘reality-checked’ through select analyses of field samples. By combining available and newly generated data, commonalities will be uncovered to develop generic and widely applicable MIC biomarker assays. Data interpretation charts and KPIs will be generated to translate field biomarker concentrations to integrity threats.
