The rise of power generation from weather-dependent renewables, combined with a major shift in demand towards increased electrification, leads to new challenges in continuously balancing demand and supply of electricity. An important direct source of flexibility for the electricity market, are battery energy storage systems (BESS). DNV has been commissioned by Invest-NL to examine the Dutch wholesale and balancing market developments and opportunities for BESS. This white paper highlights the current and future developments in electricity wholesale and balancing markets and the interactions between them. These insights are used to conclude on the most promising market opportunities for BESS.
