DNV awards industrial cyber security certification to Hyosung Heavy Industries

DNV has awarded an international industrial cyber security standard to Hyosung Heavy Industries, a South Korean heavy industries company specializing in power transmission and distribution solutions, transformers, construction, and renewable energy technologies.

The certification demonstrates compliance to IEC 62443-4-1, an international standard for industrial control system security that evaluates the technological capability to respond to various security threats, including cyberattacks, data breaches, and system failures.

With this certification, Hyosung Heavy Industries can proactively respond to the growing security requirements of the global power market while externally validating its security capabilities in critical power equipment, where high-level control and operation technologies are essential.

“We are now able to incorporate IEC 62443-4-1 security systems from the design stage of our core product lines that directly affect grid stability, such as HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current transmission), STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator), and ESS (Energy Storage Systems),” said Kyu-Chan Yeon, Executive Vice President and Head of Grid Solution Business at Hyosung Heavy Industries. “Based on this, we will continue to strengthen our security capabilities and expand the scope of certification across all power system equipment.”

“DNV’s global verification expertise and independence will provide a solid foundation for Hyosung Heavy Industries’ technological innovation to be trusted in the international market,” said Percy Lakdawalla, DNV Asia-Pacific Regional Manager.

Cyberattack threats to power grids are directly linked to national security, prompting countries to strengthen security regulations for grid infrastructure. Failures in a single piece of equipment can lead to large-scale blackouts or degrade the quality of the entire grid, making security throughout the entire lifecycle, from development to operation, a key competitive advantage.

“Threat actors are becoming more sophisticated, targeting supply chains, attacking vulnerabilities in operational technologies as energy infrastructure becomes increasingly digitalized,” said Klas Martinus Bendrik, Chief Digital Development Officer at DNV. “Secure, sustainable energy isn’t truly secure if a single cyber breach can turn off the lights. In the era of digital transformation, cyber security is a core component of power infrastructure,” he continued.

As IEC 62443‑4‑1 provides the foundational requirements for a secure product development lifecycle, Hyosung Heavy Industries is now progressing to the next step. The company has begun the application process for IEC 62443‑3‑3 certification, which will assess the detailed technical security controls of key systems such as HVDC and STATCOM.
