Who is winning the race to electrify?
Chart of the Month
China is electrifying at a much faster rate than any other region. Between 2000 and 2018, the electricity share in China’s energy mix doubled from 11% to 22%. We forecast another doubling by 2043. No other region will match this pace of growth my mid-century. In absolute values, Chinese electricity has grown over 8-fold from 2000 to 2025. Read more.

China's hydrogen play: scale today, energy security tomorrow
China is undeterred by global headwinds facing hydrogen and its derivatives. In our new Hydrogen to 2060 forecast, we find around 35% of new hydrogen production and use globally will come from China over the coming decades.
Europe's hydrogen pathway: Slower growth, sharper focus
DNV’s new hydrogen report forecasts European demand to more than treble by 2060. But significant technical, policy, regulatory and commercial challenges remain.
Hydrogen demand drives North American exports
Low-carbon hydrogen in North America is entering a more pragmatic phase. DNV’s Energy Transition Outlook: Hydrogen to 2060 shows that long-term demand, both domestic and international, will determine how hydrogen scales across the region.
The likely effects of the Iran war on the global energy transition
The Iran war has unleashed the biggest fossil supply shock in decades. The net long-term result appears to be a boost for renewables and nuclear as, in most countries, the incompatibility of oil and gas dependency with energy security is now beyond dispute.
Critical mineral supply shocks and their consequences for the energy transition
As renewables penetrate ever deeper into national energy systems, it is time to consider the short- and long-run impacts of upstream supply shocks in seemingly well-supplied markets like copper and lithium.
Are Paris goals achievable? How the energy transition measures up
In this article, we compare climate targets against emission levels forecast in DNV’s Energy Transition Outlook 2025 (ETO 2025). We project Europe to be the first region to reach net zero and examine how it can close the gap to reach the target by 2050.
