Coordinated global action will be required to lower emissions from ships, preferably regulated through the IMO. However, many state actors have developed and implemented their own regulations to lower emissions from ships. While operators would be wise to become familiar with steps smaller maritime countries or ports in the Middle East, South East Asia, South America and the Pacific have taken to lower GHGs, ambitious actions planned or taken by leading maritime nations such as China, the EU, Japan, South Korea and the United States will shape the industry’s future in the years ahead.
