Machinery safety certifications & compliance
Challenges in machinery compliance
In a world driven by industrial automation and advanced manufacturing, ensuring the safety of machinery is paramount. Regulatory requirements like the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/CE and Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 on machinery set strict standards for product safety through risk reduction.
Manufacturers, system integrators, and suppliers must demonstrate compliance to gain access to EU markets, meet CE marking obligations, and mitigate safety risks across the product lifecycle. Whether launching new products or upgrading legacy equipment, adherence to the EU requirements is key to operational safety and legal conformity.
How our machinery compliance services support you
DNV provides certification and compliance services to help organizations demonstrate conformity with the Machinery Directive 2006/428/EC and the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230.
We offer:
- Accredited machinery certification to support CE marking.
- Assessments for internal or supplier assurance.
- Technical documentation review and gap analysis.
- Risk assessments and support with safety-related controls.
- Guidance on Declaration of Conformity and manufacturer responsibilities.
Whether you're seeking third-party validation or a compliance check before formal certification, our experts deliver actionable insight and support.
DNV provides certification on a global basis to the Machinery Directive as Notified Body 2460 with DNV Product Assurance AS as the accredited and notified legal entity. We are notified for the Annex IV product category 17 (personnel lifting devices) and can certify by EC type-examination under the Machinery Directive Annex IX.
EU type-examination (module B) as set out in Annex VII of the Machinery Regulation will be offered upon notification for the same product category (Annex I, Part B, item 14). The necessary accreditation under Machinery Regulation is in place.
We can also certify non-Annex IV products on a voluntary basis, applying the same conformity assessment procedures as applied for Notified Body services described in the Machinery Directive:
- Type-examination according to Annex IX
- Full quality assurance according to Annex X
Similarly, the following voluntary services will be offered under the Machinery Regulation for non-Annex I products:
- Annex VII: Type-examination (Module B)
- Annex IX: Full quality assurance (Module H)
In case of voluntary certification, the end delivery will not be Notified Body certificates.
Transition of existing notification for Machinery Directive 2006/428/EC to the Machinery Regulation EU 2023/1230 is ongoing and will be completed within the end of 2026.
