Thick-walled pipes are difficult to manufacture and only a limited number of pipe mills and pipe-lay vessels can produce and lay them respectively. Besides that, heavy pipes are more difficult to handle and weld and require costly buckle arrestors.
In the JIP Collapse Phase 1, the pure collapse limit state equation was optimized through a combination of numerical and experimental tests. In Phase 2, using the same methodology, DNV will address the DNVGL-ST-F101 combined load limit state equation for installation design.
