ECO Retrofit – vessel efficiency upgrades
Our ECO Retrofit solution helps you identify, prioritize and implement the best retrofit measures, tailored to your operation.
With so many retrofit options available. well-informed decisions require a good understanding of your ship design and its anticipated operation. DNV experts guide you step-by-step from the first cost-benefit assessment to the final design. Retrofit options with the best return on investment encompass:
- Bulbous bow
- Propeller
- Energy-saving devices (ESDs) such as propeller boss cap fins (PBCFs)

Each design is tailor-made
We utilize a formal optimization approach featuring fully parametric models, both for the propeller and the bulbous bow. While optimizing for best performance on the agreed operational profile (speed-draft-cases), boundary conditions such as hardpoints at the bow or cavitation criteria at the propeller are considered. A typical optimization involves more than 1,000 design variants analysed on numerous operational cases.
A virtual sea trial is included
The optimization results are validated by DNV’s full-scale RANSE CFD propulsion simulations, using a standardized and validated power assessment to deliver accurate savings estimate and a comprehensive report.
Discover the advantages of retrofitting with support from DNV:
- Fast assessment of the retrofit measures that benefit you the most
- Clear overview of expected fuel savings from the measures, effective for your individual operational needs
- Guidance and expert support related to tank tests, sub-suppliers, shipyard works, sea trials and more
- Investment safety, with a higher competitive advantage on the market
- Your independent partner with only your business needs in mind
Experience in numbers
DNV has already provided retrofits for about 1,000 individual vessels, which corresponds to 25% of all qualified (in terms of age and size) container vessel designs of the world fleet. Besides container vessels, RoRo and RoPax vessels have become increasingly important.
In addition, numerous PBCFs and propeller retrofits have been optimized for various ship types to improve vessel efficiency. In combination with the bulbous bow optimization, many synergies can be utilized in this respect.
