Key outcomes of MEPC 84 – Focus on IMO’s Net‑Zero Framework
The upcoming meeting of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee, MEPC 84, together with the preceding meeting of the Working Group on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships, ISWG-GHG 21, will mark a critical moment for international shipping regulation.
Following the conclusion of the MEPC ES.2 in October 2025, where consideration of the IMO Net-Zero Framework (NZF) was deferred for a one-year “coffee break”, MEPC 84 represents an opportunity for member states to discuss the next steps and whether there is a viable path forward for the NZF.
In addition, MEPC 84 will also consider other important regulatory topics affecting the maritime industry.
The webinar agenda covers:
- NZF: Possible paths to agreement and guideline development
- Further work on the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) guidelines
- Review of the CII and SEEMP frameworks
- Amendments to the Ballast Water Management
- Convention and Code
- Q&A session
Webinar presenters are Eirik Nyhus, Director Environment, and Tore Longva, Director Decarbonization, both from DNV.
