DNV seminar

From power to pipeline: the biomethane transition and its value chain

A seminar for developers, operators and lenders exploring plant conversion, new-build projects and the conditions for bankability

What should you assess when converting an existing biogas-to-power plant to biomethane production, or when developing a new biomethane project?

Join developers, network operators and lenders in Paris to explore the technical requirements, grid connections and commercial factors that shape project viability.

Through presentations, panel discussions and networking, examine project economics, risk allocation and bankability, alongside the potential for biogenic CO₂ to provide additional revenue.

Gain a clearer view of which criteria to prioritise when screening projects, and how to distinguish core project fundamentals from potential additional value streams.

Why attend?

  • Clarify your project pathway.
Understand the different considerations for converting existing plants and developing new biomethane projects.
  • Identify critical infrastructure requirements.
Examine upgrading, gas quality and grid-connection needs, including coordination between developers and network operators.
  • Understand what shapes bankability.
Hear developer, operator and lender perspectives on project economics, revenue visibility and risk allocation.
  • Put additional revenue opportunities in context.
Explore the practical and commercial potential of biogenic CO₂ recovery without confusing it with core project viability.
  • Compare perspectives across the value chain.
Use panel discussions and networking to discuss shared challenges with developers, operators and lenders.

Key takeaways

Leave with a clearer understanding of what makes a biomethane project viable from converting existing plants or developing new facilities to meeting grid-injection requirements.

The seminar will connect technical considerations with project economics, risk and revenue opportunities, including biogenic CO₂ recovery.

Agenda

From power to pipeline: the biomethane transition and its value chain - preliminary programme

09:30 - 10:00

Reception and welcome coffee

10:00 - 10:30

Session 1 (presentation): Framing - the end of the biogas-to-power model

An introduction to why the CHP model is losing value, the implications of plant conversion and new-build injection, and the questions the seminar will address.

10:30 - 11:30

Session 2 (presentation): The biomethane pathway and infrastructure needs

The pathway from feedstock to injection-ready biomethane, covering upgrading technologies, plant-scale thresholds, engineering constraints for conversion and new-build projects, and typical project challenges. The session will also examine grid connection and injection requirements, metering, gas quality, interfaces between developers and network operators, and CAPEX/OPEX ranges.

11:45 - 12:45

Session 3 (panel): Biomethane economics, risks, and bankability

A discussion of revenue stacking, feedstock security and cost, offtake structures, market exposure, digestate management and valorization, and the allocation of key risks. The session will bring together developer, operator, and lender perspectives.

13:00 - 14:15

Lunch

14:15 - 15:15

Session 4 (panel): The associated biogenic CO₂ upside (in French)

An overview of the French biogenic CO₂ sector, including key figures and stakeholders. The session will draw on practical, operational, and economic experience from a project utilizing biogenic CO₂, and cover food-grade quality requirements and ongoing research.

15:30 - 16:00

Session 5 (close-out): Synthesis from opportunity to Investment decision - which biomethane projects will succeed?

A synthesis of the day's discussions to prioritize project-screening criteria: feedstock availability, project scale, grid access, digestate management and valorization, revenue visibility, permitting, and long-term competitiveness. The session will assess biogenic CO₂ valorization, Guarantees of Origin, and other complementary revenues as differentiators or potential additional returns relative to core project economics.
