DNV-ST-C108 Structural design of floats for floating photovoltaic systems

Standard

Edition 2026-04

This standard (ST) provides technical requirements and guidance for the design and testing of the structural parts of floats for FPV systems.

The ST provides requirements addressing both the short- and long-term performance of floats.

The level of engineering and testing required to comply with this standard is based on the consequences of failure of the floats. This ST provides requirements for the:

  • Selection of the appropriate safety and consequence categories
  • Minimum content of a design basis
  • Selection and qualification of materials
  • Identification of relevant failure mechanisms for non-metallic materials
  • Design of structural parts, and the selection of appropriate safety factors for metallic and non-metallic materials
  • Selection of appropriate safety factors
  • Relevant testing programme and procedures
  • Design and testing of non-metallic material components subject to solar radiation
  • Design of coating/corrosion protection systems

This standard also incorporates guidance and requirements from, and references to, other standards where applicable, with respect to the structural design, analysis, manufacturing, testing, and marking of FPV installations.

The principles described and terminology used in this standard are aligned with DNV-RP-0584 and DNV-ST-E309, together providing a complete industry practice for FPV systems.
