Inherit Carbon Solutions delivers carbon removal credits to DNV

The purchase supports DNV’s strategy to reduce its own emissions, address unavoidable residual emissions, and become climate positive.

In 2020, DNV set a goal to become climate positive. This means removing more greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere than we generate as an organization. We do this through a wide range of initiatives, including the purchase of carbon removal credits.

Under the agreement with Inherit, which came into effect in 2025, DNV will purchase verified carbon removal credits over a five-year period. The credits are linked to the capture and permanent storage of CO₂ from biogas production at a wastewater facility in Norway. This is especially relevant for DNV, as wastewater from our headquarters is treated at the same advanced facility, which now includes carbon capture. It also makes DNV one of only a few buyers in this emerging market.

The carbon removal credits now issued are the first to be delivered under the contract. The credits will be registered on Puro.earth, with DNV listed as the beneficiary.

Addressing unavoidable emissions

The agreement with Inherit, helps DNV address unavoidable emissions while supporting the growth of carbon removal technology. It also complements other carbon removal initiatives across DNV, such as Seaweed Carbon Solutions and our Joint Industry Project to grow seaweed, capture CO2 and create biochar. In 2026, DNV also signed an agreement with Carbon Centric to purchase CO₂ removal certificates from 2028 onwards.

DNV’s approach to carbon credits focuses on transparency, traceability and credit quality in the voluntary carbon market.

Supporting the path to net zero

DNV’s climate strategy is closely linked to our Energy Transition Outlook, which finds that both nature-based and technology-based carbon removals must be scaled to achieve net zero. DNV selects carbon removal projects in line with the Oxford Principles for Net-Zero Aligned Carbon Offsetting. Our policy also allows investment in certified carbon offset and carbon removal projects to neutralize any remaining emissions after reductions have been made.

As part of this strategy, DNV will continue to explore opportunities to invest in innovative nature-based solutions and carbon capture and storage projects. The aim is to make a tangible contribution to a low-carbon future.
