This technology, referenced in multiple NACE standards, helps pipeline operators diagnose not only the rate, but also the cause of internal corrosion initiation; something that is not possible using standard weight loss coupons. EA coupons have been employed in a wide variety of pipeline environments, including upstream production, produced water, finished crude, wet and dry natural gas, hydrogen, condensed water, hydrotest water, and others. EA coupons are particularly useful for collecting biofilms for molecular microbiological analysis and relating biofilm composition and activity to localized corrosion initiation, to determine whether microbiologically influence corrosion (MIC) is occurring.
