Learning Objectives:

  • Apply advanced principles of CENELEC RAMS standards in complex railway projects
  • Translate operational, system, and safety objectives into structured RAMS requirements
  • Analyse and allocate RAM and safety targets across subsystems and interfaces
  • Perform and interpret advanced hazard analysis and risk assessment techniques
  • Evaluate software and programmable systems requirements in accordance with EN 50716 and EN 50716
  • Assess hardware, system architecture, and safety integrity considerations under EN 50129
  • Develop and review RAMS documentation and assurance evidence for compliance and project approval
  • Support verification, validation, and safety case activities throughout the lifecycle
  • Critically examine trade-offs between performance, maintainability, safety, and lifecycle cost
  • Apply learning through advanced case studies, workshops, and project-based exercises
  • Strengthen technical judgement and decision-making for RAMS leadership and assurance roles

Scope:

Day 1:

  • Advanced RAMS framework and system lifecycle application
  • System definition, operational context, and interface management
  • RAM and safety requirements capture and apportionment
  • Advanced systems engineering concepts for railway assurance
  • Detailed application of EN 50126-1 and EN 50126-2
  • Case study and workshop – scoping a RAMS programme

Day 2:

  • Advanced hazard identification and safety analysis techniques
  • Quantitative and qualitative risk assessment approaches
  • Software assurance and lifecycle requirements under EN 50716
  • Case study and workshop – hazard log and risk treatment development

Day 3:

  • Functional safety and safety integrity in railway applications
  • Advanced application of EN 50129 to systems, hardware, and evidence
  • Safety case structure, argumentation, and evidence management
  • Factors influencing RAMS performance and assurance outcomes
  • Review of material, technical discussion, and practitioner Q&A

Day 4:

  • Group workshop – applying RAMS methods to a project scenario
  • Assessment and technical review

Duration: 4 intensive days of advanced practitioner-led training, combining expert instruction, applied workshops, and scenario-based technical exercises.

Entry requirements:  Participants should have at least 5 years of professional experience in System Assurance and/or RAMS Assurance with involvement in at least two projects with direct responsibility for functional safety development. Evidence supporting compliance with these requirements will be requested and reviewed before the candidate is included in this course.

Assessment: Participants are assessed through a structured end-of-course evaluation designed to test advanced understanding, technical judgement, and practical application of RAMS principles. Successful participants who achieve the required pass mark will be awarded a certificate of completion.

Certificate and validity: Participants who successfully complete the course and meet the required assessment standard will receive a DNV Certificate of Completion, recognising advanced training in railway RAMS. The certificate is issued without expiry, providing a lasting record of professional development and technical achievement.

Delivery method: Delivered as an expert-led learning experience either face-to-face or online depending on location. The course combines specialist instruction, facilitated discussion, and applied workshop sessions to maximise practical value for participants. Alternative delivery formats can also be tailored to client requirements, audience profile, and cohort size.
