Overview of Key Railway Standards

The content is divided into thematic modules, using an integrated approach to the concepts, focusing on the practical application of the standards and the contextualization of the requirements within railway projects.

Learning Objectives:

The objective of this training is to empower participants in the application of railway safety standards, focusing on CENELEC standards:

  • EN 50126-1:2017 Railway Applications – The Specification and Demonstration of Reliability, Availability Maintainability and Safety (RAMS)
  • EN 50126-2:2017 Railway Applications – The Specification and Demonstration of Reliability, Availability Maintainability and Safety (RAMS), Part 2: Guide to the application of EN 50126-1 for Safety.
  • EN 50716:2023 Railway Applications: Communication, Signaling and Processing Systems – Software for Railway Control and Protection Systems.
  • EN 50129:2018 Railway Applications – Communication, Signaling and processing systems. Safety Related Electronic Systems for Signaling.

After taking the course attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental principles of CENELEC standards
  • Be familiar with:
    • critical software standard (EN 50128/EN 50716)
    • hardware and systems standard (EN 50129)
  • Apply concepts in practical exercises and case studies – Connect theory to practice
  • Immediately apply knowledge with critical thinking and decision-making

    • Introduction to the standard
    • Structure and main requirements
    • Life cycle management

Day 2:

  • Introduction to EN 50716
    • Scope and objectives
  • Case Study 3
  • Knowledge levelling – Independent Safety Assessment (ISA)
  • Factors Influencing RAMS Management
  • Group Session

Duration: 2 days

Entry requirements: No formal prerequisites are required. This course is designed to be accessible to professionals across the railway sector, and while a general understanding of the railway environment would be beneficial, it is not essential. It is particularly well suited to engineers, project managers, safety professionals, and others seeking a foundation in key railway standards and their practical application.

Assessment: There is no formal assessment in this course – candidates should attend the Level 1 RAMS Course to be eligible to obtain formal certification.

Certificate and validity: Participants who attend the full 2 days will receive a certificate of attendance.

Delivery method: Delivered as an expert-led learning experience either face-to-face or online depending on location. The course combines specialist instruction, facilitated discussion, and applied workshop sessions to maximise practical value for participants. Alternative delivery formats can also be tailored to client requirements, audience profile, and cohort size.
