Non-Destructive Testing Specialists (NDT)

Journey continues on Veracity, DNV's trusted digital platform.

Non-destructive testing (NDT) is the process of inspecting, examining or evaluating materials, components or assemblies for discontinuities or differences in properties without destroying the usability of the part or system. In other words, when the inspection or investigation is complete, the part can still be used.

DNV has been accredited by the RvA (17024) to certify non-destructive testing specialists in accordance with the international standard NEN-EN-ISO 9712 as of 1 July 2021.

A variety of NDT research methods are applied in industrial sectors.

For Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) 2014/68/EU Cat III and above, it is mandatory for NDT specialists to be certified by an accredited certification body.

The personal certification includes professional competence in the NDT methods at various qualification levels, as described in the ISO 9712, namely:

Accredited main methods:

  • Acoustic emission testing;
  • Eddy current research;
  • Leak testing;
  • Magnetic examination;
  • Penetrant testing;
  • Radiographic examination;
  • Strain gauge examination;

Tthermographic testing;

  • Ultrasonic examination;
  1. Ultrasonic wall thickness measurement & corrosion detection;
  2. Time of Flight Diffraction;
  3. Phased Array;
  4. FMC (Full Matrix Capture);
  • Visual examination;

 A certificate is valid for a maximum of 5 years. After 5 years, you can renew the certificate for another 5 years based on your practical experience. After 10 years, you will have to take the exam again.

To be certified for NDT, one must successfully pass both a theory and a practical exam before completing the training.
