The maritime landscape is changing, largely driven by decarbonization and digitalization. In this latest study by the Singapore Maritime Foundation and DNV, we examine the impact of these transformative forces on ship management and seafarers in the lead-up to 2030.

New regulations have seen shipowners and operators increasingly explore the use of alternative fuels and deploy new energy-saving technologies onboard. In addition, the growing automation of components and systems onboard is expected to bring about a rise in autonomous and smart ships in the future.

Eighty-one percent of seafarers surveyed indicated that they require either partial or complete training to effectively work with the advanced technology that will be present onboard future ships.

As such, this study provides recommendations on enhancing seafarer training and development to prepare them for the skill requirements of the future, while leveraging decarbonization and digitalization to improve job attraction and retention in the industry.
