Methanol fuel in shipping

Learn more about the barriers and pathways to low-GHG methanol as a marine fuel

Methanol is emerging as one of the most practical low-greenhouse gas (GHG) fuels for deep-sea shipping. With more than 450 methanol-capable vessels already in operation or on order, the technology is proven. However, most of these vessels still run on fossil fuels, and uptake of low-GHG methanol remains limited.

The paper explains why methanol stands out among alternative fuels, its environmental benefits, and the steps needed to scale production and bunkering. It includes an analysis of the updated Alternative Fuel Barrier Dashboard for methanol, showing how ship-related barriers have largely been removed and where challenges remain.

It also outlines possible demand projections for low-GHG methanol up to 2040, highlights regulatory drivers, and presents strategies for shipowners to future-proof their fleets.
