Ammonia Safety Seminar

As Singapore prepares to deploy low- or zero-carbon ammonia for power generation and bunkering, ensuring safe design and operation across the entire value chain is a priority for regulators, developers, operators and service providers.

Ammonia presents specific hazards, including toxicity, corrosiveness and flammability. Accidental releases during production, storage, transportation and utilisation can form toxic clouds that may threaten workers and nearby communities. Robust risk analysis and management are essential from early design onward.

You are cordially invited to attend the Ammonia Safety Seminar, where participants will gain valuable insights into ammonia safety challenges and approaches to risk assessment, and see how DNV's Phast, Safeti, Phast CFD and KFX software tools are applied to real ammonia scenarios.

Registration closes on 27 October 2026.

Welcome address

09:15 - 09:45

Ammonia value chains and production pathways

An overview of ammonia production routes, supply chains, and emerging low-carbon pathways, highlighting how expanding applications across sectors introduce new safety considerations throughout storage, transport, and end-use.

09:45 - 10:15

Ammonia incidents, hazards and real risk scenarios

A review of ammonia hazard characteristics and real-world incident scenarios, illustrating potential consequences of releases and the importance of robust risk assessment, engineering design, and operational controls to safeguard personnel and assets.

10:15 - 10:45

Ammonia dispersion modelling in ammonia facilities

Ammonia is moving from industrial chemical to energy carrier and marine fuel, raising the stakes on toxic release risk. This session shows why dispersion modelling underpins regulatory approval, layout and emergency planning, and how to do it well: from Phast screening to Phast CFD and KFX for complex, congested geometries.

10:45 - 11:00

Coffee break and networking

11:00 - 11:30

Ammonia dispersion in enclosed spaces and ventilation modelling

Examines dispersion behaviour in confined environments such as engine rooms, focusing on airflow dynamics, ventilation effectiveness, and the role of advanced CFD modelling in ensuring safe conditions for personnel.

11:30 - 12:00

Ammonia bunkering in Singapore: ITOCHU's roadmap from demonstration to safe implementation

ITOCHU outlines its roadmap for ammonia bunkering in Singapore, from an overview of its related business to the demonstration projects now underway and the path to commercial implementation. The talk closes with the safety measures and regulatory expectations needed to scale ammonia as a marine fuel responsibly.

12:00 - 13:00

Ammonia bunkering safety

An overview of safety considerations during ammonia bunkering operations, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and practical measures to ensure safe transfer operations in ports and ship-to-ship environments.

13:30 - 14:00

Ammonia fuel at sea: mitigation methods for ammonia loss of containment (LOC)

The use of ammonia as a marine fuel presents a unique hazard profile. CFD simulations can predict ammonia dispersion and assess the effectiveness of mitigation measures. This presentation highlights approaches for managing ammonia LOC, including indoor ventilation in machinery spaces and other air-based mitigation method, as well as spill containment and drainage,.

14:00 - 14:30

Mitigation strategies for ammonia dispersion using water curtains

Explores the application of water curtains as a mitigation measure to reduce ammonia dispersion, supported by quantitative assessment of their effectiveness using advanced CFD modelling.

14:30 - 14:45

Coffee break and networking

14:45 - 15:30

Integrating dispersion into quantitative risk analysis (QRA) for ammonia facilities

Introduces QRA methodologies for ammonia installations, demonstrating how dispersion and consequence modelling are integrated to evaluate risk levels and support informed decision-making for facility layout, design, and operations.

15:15 - 15:45

Parametric studies on control measures for risk reduction in ammonia facilities

The value of an ammonia risk-reduction measure depends on the risk criterion governing the facility decision. Parametric QRA demonstrates that storage, containment and pipework safeguards influence different contours and do not combine additively. The findings help facility owners target investment toward measures that support safer design and deliver measurable regulatory benefit.

15:30 - 16:15

Ammonia transportation risk: extending safety beyond the plant boundary

Covers safety considerations for ammonia transport by using long pipeline and bulk transport, including release scenarios, consequence modelling, and risk assessment methods to manage hazards across transportation routes and interface points.

16:15 - 16:30
