Parliamentary Evening: Nuclear Propulsion in Shipping
Is Nuclear Propulsion a Viable Pathway to Maritime Decarbonization? A Fact-Based Discussion on Technology, Risks and Regulation
Achieving climate-neutral shipping by 2050 will require the deployment of all available technical and operational solutions. Given the limited availability of alternative fuels, nuclear propulsion for ships is once again attracting attention – particularly for energy-intensive long-distance trades such as container shipping.
But how realistic is this option? Which technologies are currently being developed, when can international regulation be expected, and how can business models, liability frameworks and waste management be addressed? Above all, what are the safety implications, and will society accept nuclear propulsion in shipping?
Together with senior representatives from politics, industry and academia, the German Shipowners’ Association (VDR) and DNV will discuss the opportunities, challenges and framework conditions for the use of nuclear propulsion in the maritime sector.
