TECHNOLOG Services, a Hamburg-based maritime industry consulting and design company, needed to find a dispersion analysis solution for a project involving the design of an ammonia-fuelled container vessel. They wanted to give the customer and project partners the answers they needed in the event of an emergency blow-out.
With the help of Phast Online, the company can now offer their customers dispersion analyses. "It was the first time that dispersion analyses have been required in our scope of work," says TECHNOLOG Managing Director Helge Voigt.
TECHNOLOG designed a 10,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) ammonia-fuelled vessel. The scope of documents for the required hazard study during the "approval in principle" process included the dispersion analysis of an ammonia blow-out situation of the tank system.
Robin Kloske, Naval Architect at TECHNOLOG, was responsible for the dispersion analyses. After researching the options for a suitable tool, TECHNOLOG chose Phast Online, which is readily available from DNV’s Veracity marketplace. With immediate access to Phast Online after a simple purchase, TECHNOLOG was up and running on performing dispersion analysis in a matter of hours.

"We immediately had easy access to the software," says Kloske. "We were on an extremely tight schedule. Phast Online is quite straightforward, which made it attractive to us" he says.
"We looked at the resulting concentration of ammonia in the air, in particular in the ship’s surroundings and the accommodation area of the ship," says Kloske. "Getting the calculations running was quite straightforward and user-friendly. With only a few parameters as input data it is possible to get first results."
Phast Online is a web-based platform for consequence analysis applications. The applications are based on Phast calculation models with a simplified interface. It provides an easier entry-point for new users, offering suggested models for different scenarios.
TECHNOLOG used the output from Phast Online to export the data into other applications. They were able to create 2D visualizations of the ship with iso-contours depicting ammonia releases under different scenarios. The results could be used to analyse toxicity at relevant positions on the ship for emergency scenarios during operation.
"The customer and our approval partners at DNV Maritime were satisfied with the results and our presentation," says Kloske. "If we have similar requests for future projects, involving dispersion analyses for ammonia or methanol fuel in an early project phase, Phast Online is most certainly the tool we would use," says Kloske.
